The New York Senate has passed legislation to make e-scooters and motor-assisted bikes legal in the state.

New York may finally be ready to authorize the use of electronic scooters and motor-assisted bikes on city streets and sidewalks after years of opposition.

New York City and other towns will be able to decide if and how these cars can operate within their borders, thanks to a bill adopted by state legislators.

Companies that operate scooter-share operations in other states, such as Bird, Lime, Spin, Uber, and Lyft, may enter the New York market soon once the bill is signed.

On the other hand, Governor Cuomo is apprehensive of the potential consequences of these vehicles and is still debating whether the measure should be rejected or modified.

Among the issues that he and others are concerned about are:

Pedestrian danger: The governor is concerned that permitting motorized vehicles on sidewalks may result in a severe pedestrian accident.

As a result, even if the bill is passed, New York State or individual communities may continue to prohibit the use of sidewalks.

High speeds in bike lanes: With fatal crashes involving cyclists already on the rise in 2019, introducing e-scooters capable of speeds of up to 25 miles per hour to bike lanes could exacerbate an already dangerous scenario.

According to legislation passed by both houses of the New York state, riders of e-scooters and motorized bikes must be at least 16 years old.

Despite a CDC study proving the risk of traumatic brain damage, the present version of the bill does not make helmets required, unlike an earlier version.

A ticket for using an electric scooter or motor-assisted bicycle in New York currently carries a $500 fine.

Despite this, some people utilize these cars for recreational purposes or to deliver goods.

If they are made legal, e-scooter use will skyrocket almost immediately, with injuries possible even in the best of circumstances.
